For obvious reasons, I cannot regulate what you use to assist in the completion of this exam…therefore all notes, graded assignments, and power points can be used.  Your success in online coursework is largely dependent on you…take this as an opportunity to see what you have truly learned in the course thus far. You will be graded on the honesty and integrity of your answers, as well as a common-sense assessment of how well you fully and completely answered each question. My suggestion to you is that you should write enough on each question to leave no doubt in my mind that you deserve an “A” on the exam. Two important rules:  1). DO NOT SKIP any question.  2). DO NOT copy and paste your answers from some other source. This practice is called plagiarism and WILL result in your failure of the course.

The following 10 questions are worth 10 points each.

1.  What is parole?  Briefly discuss the history of the development and use of parole.

2.  Why does the federal prison system no longer utilize parole? Make sure to note when the federal system abolished the use of parole in your answer.

3.  Describe the administrative structure and organization of parole in Texas?  How does parole work in Texas? Discuss the difference in types of parole officer’s and their duties in your answer.

4.  Discuss the structure and the nature of the juvenile justice system in Texas.  Be sure to address the following in your answer:  who is considered a juvenile under Texas law, what are status offenses, certification, structure of juvenile probation and incarceration agencies in Texas.

5.  Discuss each of the following notable cases pertaining to juvenile justice:  Kent v. United States, In Re Gault, In Re Winship, and Roper v. Simmons

6.  Discuss important trends in American incarceration over the last 150 years, offering your analysis as to why such trends have occurred.

7.  Compare and contrast the arguments for and against the use of the death penalty.

8.  What is the significance of Furman v. Georgia and Gregg v. Georgia?

9.  What do you foresee for the future of capital punishment in the United States?  In Texas?

10.  Do you support the use of the death penalty?  Why or why not?
