3.4 Analyse the advantages and disadvantages gained from retaining some power differences

IMPORTANT!: Advice from lecture  how to answer the questions3.1 all the role differences between counsellor and client – more than two examples, counsellor has many roles that they are in control of, being able to develop and have contract in place, setting, referrals, supervision, insurance – all these roles separate us. Different roles – the job of the client, then use French and Raven to talk about inherent power differences. Adapt the discussion to counselling perspective – for instance, legal aspect within counselling, explain power differences and perceptions of power. For instance client has the power to complain against us? Client could feel we are the guru of counselling and we give them all the answers. Evaluate how the power differences can be reduced – what can we do to invite the client to have a different perception of the client, to encourage the client to feel equal? They are not equal but we are inviting them to feel as equal as possible.

We cant give up the power of putting contract in place, setting boundaries, referral and supervision, advantages of having those – also look at disadvantages from client perspective. Think about the client – if the client doesn’t attend?:
