Science Meets Real Life

Whether you think of yourself as an up and coming scientist or not, you use science every day. You will explore how you apply different aspects of science in your daily life in a two part project. In 1,000-words, discuss the following:

The Scientific Method

Each and every day, you are faced with having to make split-second decisions, and the need to solve random problems that you encounter. To reach those decisions and work those problems out you are subconsciously using the scientific method. Apply the steps of the Scientific Method (which I have attached for you labeled scientific method handout).  to two situations that could occur in your everyday life. Use the scientific method in the first scenario provided to you.

Please come up with a second detailed scenario on your own, using the categories provided, and follow the same steps in the scientific method to find a resolution.

For both scenarios, be sure to use terminology from the scientific method (hypothesis, experiment, etc.) while describing how you would address each problem.

SCENARIO 1 (Assigned scenario):

Imagine that a close family member wants to find out more about your KU Online science class, and you start telling them about what you have learned and the discussions you have been having in class.  Then that same close family member mentions to you that they have been hearing a lot of news surrounding the issue of global warming. They ask you to give an example of how this is occurring. What you decide to do is to use the scientific method to show your close family member how scientists have made the determination that global warming is occurring.

Here are the guidelines:

You can use any part of global warming that interests you most. You can use any reliable sources of your choice but here are a few websites to get you started:

·         http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/

·         http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cmb-faq/globalwarming.html

Next – after you choose an aspect of global warming that interests you – you will use the scientific method to help you explain to your family member about that certain aspect of global warming and the evidence that scientists have used to demonstrate that global warming is occurring.

We recommend that you use the steps of the scientific method as section headings in your paper. That way you can keep your paper very organized and demonstrate how scientists investigate the aspect of global warming that you chose. Please be sure to include:

·         Asking Question Based on Observations

·         Background Research

·         Hypothesis

·         Testing (What tests have been done to demonstrate this?)

·         Results that have been found

·         Conclusion – This is where you use all of the steps of the scientific method as a summary to indicate to your family member that global warming is occurring.

CATEGORIES FOR SCENARIO 2: (Please come up with a second detailed scenario on your own, using one of the categories provided below, and follow the same steps in the scientific method to find a resolution).

A problem with an appliance at your home

A problem with an injured or sick pet, family member, or friend

A problem with missing library book or lost keys

Your final project should be a minimum of 1,000-words written in APA style format. As always, be sure to provide appropriate citations, references, and links to any information you use in this paper. Be sure to also avoid copying and pasting large sections of text from any given source. For help with citations, refer to the APA Quick Reference.
