Thus the international firms must take social responsibilities while operating in the host communities. While setting up goals and objectives, the firms should align their goals with the “big good” of local communities. Because without social responsibilities, the international firms may gain benefits for themselves but cause detriment of the local community. This also aligns with Drucker’s vision of social responsibility and contribution to society. Peter Drucker believes that economic performance is not the only responsibility of a business. A business must also “assume responsibility for its impact on employees, the environment, customers, and whoever and whatever it touches” (Patience, 2019). But what should be watchful is that “good intentions are not always socially responsible” (Patience, 2019). The question is how to make sure a business is socially responsible. As Bird & Smucker (2007) mentioned, the three principles that must be taken into consideration when assessing the social responsibilities of international business firms include: (1) the awareness and understanding of the historical and institutional dynamics of local communities; (2) the engagement in non- intimidating communication with local constituencies; (3) the degree the firm boosts the social and economic assets of local communities. Understanding the dynamics of local communities is very important for international firms to contextualize general moral guidelines. Open communication, including bringing up questions, listening, and exploring possible solutions, is obviously important for understanding the local culture and being aware of the local needs and concerns. In the meantime, to be socially responsible, the firms should care about the well-being of the local communities and ensure a positive influence on the local communities. That means the operation of the firms should help improve the living conditions of the local communities.
