We have our phones, social media, video games, TV/movies, drugs, alcohol, and information on anything at our fingertips. We are bombarded by notifications, dings, pings, updates, and nudges to stay using these forms of entertainment as companies tap into our collective sense of FOMO. When Facebook sends us a notification of a memory from 4 years ago, they know that a very high percentage of us will check and log in for that moment. That tether and connection means revenue from their advertisers and companies are making billions of dollars to find new & innovative ways to keep us connected, logged-in, entertained, and consuming. On the flip side, pursuing a life of purpose, meaning, and value takes time and effort. I always say that it’s easy to get nothing out of a class and it’s easy to get nothing out of life. It takes a little bit more effort though to make sure we get to look back on our lives and say we did a good job for ourselves and for those around us. In college, students are asked to complete courses, study for exams, and be successful students while trying to balance personal challenges (loneliness, isolation, perfectionism, motivation, mental health, fear), social activities (parties, friends, clubs), personal responsibilities (family, work, community, etc.), and countless distractions (video games, parties, social media, peer pressure, & other entertainment). As with any behavioral change, metacognition, developing insight, changing behaviors, and creating a concrete plan of action can be helpful.
